Mr. Subhendu Kumar Bal is the President & Chief Risk Officer at SBI Life Insurance, bringing with him over 3 decades of rich work experience with deep and comprehensive expertise across all actuarial functions and several non-actuarial functions in the life insurance industry. He is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI) and a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, UK (FIA). He is the Past President of the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI). ​

Over the years, he has played a significant roles at the Institute, having served as President, Honorary Secretary, and Chairperson of the Advisory Groups for several Advisory groups. He holds a Postgraduate degree in Statistics from the University of Calcutta and is an alumnus of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA, reflecting a strong foundation in both quantitative analysis and global business leadership. He has actively participated in numerous international seminars, conferences, and forums on actuarial science and life insurance, contributing meaningfully to global and domestic thought leadership. He is also a regular contributor to industry discourse, with multiple articles and analytical write-ups published in leading national newspapers, particularly on insurance, risk management, and regulatory matters. ​

He has contributed to academia as a Visiting Faculty at a Management Institute, where he taught courses on Life & Health Insurance, Group Insurance, and Risk Insurance Management. He was awarded “Best Actuary – Life Insurance” at the 3rd Insurance Alertss Conclave and Excellence Awards (2019) and was also honoured with “CRO of the Year” by UBS Forums in 2022.​
